Castlevania Lords of Shadow producer: new Contra entry needs to "stand out"

Added: 13.08.2013 12:29 | 8 views | 0 comments

Dave Cox says that previous titles like Contra 4 and Hard Corps: Uprising are "not doing anything new" and are remakes of "something that has happened before."

Castlevania Lords of Shadow series producer Dave Cox said on a that he would love to work on the Contra series, but only if he and his team were able to do something unique and intuitive that hasn't been done before.

"You can't just bring out a generic shooter. You have to have a new idea. I think if we had a new idea and we could combine [it] with the universe of Contra, that would be special. Yeah, watch this space."

Cox said that recent entries in the series like Contra 4 and Hard Corps: Uprising were not doing anything new. "You are basically remaking or doing your slant of something that has happened before. You have to have the things that made that game great, like Castlevania, you need to have that, but you have to not be afraid to do something new. The problem with Contra it hasn#146;t really had anything done new to it so it's become this hardcore niche game."

He suggested that one way to bring the series out of its hardcore niche shell was to treat it like releasing a new IP in many ways. "We are hardcore gamers, we played those games, but there are a lot of people that don#146;t know what Contra is. They have no idea. There is a massive audience out there; they play Call of Duty and love those games, but they don't know what Contra is. I think if we were going to reintroduce something to that audience, it has to be new and unique. It's got to stand out. It's got to have a new idea, something really cool about it that's never been done before."

will be out this November.

A Tribute to the Beat'em Up Genre

Added: 30.06.2013 14:16 | 10 views | 0 comments

You probably know Final Fight, Streets of Rage, and TMNT Turtles in Time. All three are "oldschool" beat'em ups, developed in the eighties and nineties, but the genre changed with the time. The Game-Art-HQ Community started an art collaboration where 15 beat'em ups from 1988 till 2010 were illustrated by around 20 artists, there are also lots of informations about the beat'em up genre, the illustrated game and what it added to the genre. The games are: Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Golden Axe, Captain Commando, Streets of Rage, TMNT: Turtles in Time, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, Legend, Battletoads, Comix Zone, Panzer Bandit, Castle Crashers, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Tron: Evolution Not every famous beat'em up is featured there yet, and i guess not everyone would count Castlevania Lords of Shadow as a beat'em up too.

VGS: 'Castlevania: Lords of Shadow came out in Q4 2010. It was developed by Mercury Steam in collaboration with Kojima Productions. Now this is a really nice collectors edition. First of all, the presentation is close to perfect. This beautiful box is made from matte paper, with impressive artwork on every side. It also comes with a nice looking mask which resembles the one in the game.'
